What on earth is this parallel universe theory?

I just watched the Lakehouse yesterday. Maybe I should not go too much into the details since it's still not out in Singapore and this will become a spoiler if I were to spill out too much...
But still, it just did not make sense to me how you can meet up with someone living 2 years ahead or behind you. Ridiculous, isn't it? Then again, my friend does has a point too. It's the 'magic' of cinematography. Nothing is impossible! BUT still....some things ought to make abit more sense, don't it? The magic still has to come from somewhere... I guess someone needs to inplant some chip into my head to make me stop this big fuss and just enjoy the movie in the name of a movie...
